PACIFIC PRIMATE SANCTUARY'S VOLUNTEER FAMILY
Keeping a clean facility, providing a wide variety
of fresh and healthy foods and maintaining naturalistic jungle-like
habitats with lots of green growing plants for over 70 monkeys is
a lot of work, day and night.
Without the help of a nurturing, dedicated family of 15 hard-working
volunteers, Pacific Primate Sanctuary would not be able to successfully
provide a clean, peaceful, healing environment to as many animals
as we currently do.
Each morning a volunteer quietly comes to feed the monkeys, clean
their habitats, sweep and mop their rooms. The evening volunteer
collects and cleans the bowls and enclosures and closes up for the
night. These are the monkeys' Angels, feeding, cleaning, comforting,
singing a lullaby, guardians of this Sanctuary, keepers of the peace.
Each volunteer brings a special quality, their gift, and all play
a part in the recovery and well-being of the primates here.
In the office, volunteers work on newsletters, write grant proposals,
respond to mail, fill out Federal forms, keep records, follow up
on requests to place primates here.
Volunteers have been growing hundreds of plants for the past fifteen
years as part of our Zoological Horticulture Project. The plant
people help grow the fruits and vegetables we feed to the monkeys,
take care of the trees, vines and flowers which will go into their
habitats.
Volunteers pick up donated food from the local health food stores,
do library research, make repairs to the enclosures, mow the grass,
and work together, as a family, to maintain and improve the Sanctuary
for the monkeys. Some people hitch hike to get here, others drive
an hour each way. To the amazement of their co-workers at their
places of employment, volunteers turn down paid work to come and
help here.
Without the support of committed, compassionate people, and ongoing
financial donations Pacific Primate Sanctuary couldn't continue
to provide care for the monkeys who have found refuge, healing and
love here.
